My Favorite Camping Spots

Chattooga River “Furniture Spot”
2 Miles

Great spot on river with chairs and tables built from stone. Large fire pit. Can handle 6+ people. From Greenville take Hwy 23 to Seneca. Right on Hwy 28 through Walhalla. Parking area on right, just before bridge over the river. At trailhead: take path to left through a field. Hike approximately 50 minutes. Site is on right. Kind of hard to see through brush, but worth it!

Panthertown “Beach Spot”
1.7 Miles

Excellent site with awesome view of a waterfall and trout pool. Can handle four on site and within 100 yards is a larger area. Map skills vital! Google Panthertown Valley Trail Map. Scroll down and print PDF map. Then scroll up to Hiking Panthertown Valley. Click and get directions from Asheville. Apply these to… From Greenville take Hwy 276 to Hwy 11. Head west to Hwy 178. Right on 178 to Brevard. Pick up 64 west. At parking area follow map to Devil’s Elbow Trail. After a nice climb and descent go left at fork in trail. Side trail is on left before you get to the stream. Follow sound of water.

Panthertown “A-Frame”
4.0 Miles

Great spot with a large A-Frame shelter. Site can handle 10+. See Beach spot for directions to parking area. Use your PDF map to pick up Pantertown Valley Trail to the shelter (indicated on map).

Eastatoe Creek – Heritage Preserve Trail
1.8 Miles

Beautiful camping on the creek with a sweet mini-gorge. Groups of 6+. From Greenville take Hwy 276 to 11 west. Turn right on Hwy 178. Go left at Foothills Trail access sign. From parking area, head up gravel road and take first left. Trail finishes with steep switchback descent.

Thompson River
4.0 Miles

Nice small spot on Thompson River for 4 people. Short walk to large rock face with waterfall and pool. From Greenville, take Hwy 276 to Hwy 11 west. Take a right on Hwy 130. Right into Bad Creek Reservoir. Let electric gate open. At parking area, follow Blue Blaze Spur Trail to whitewater river. Cross bridge. Go right. Follow white blazes to Thompson River. Camp spot on right across bridge.

Chattooga River “Beach Point”
1.0 Miles

Large camp spot with stone built benches and fire pit on river. Large sandy beach next to site for 6+ people. From Greenville take Hwy 123 to Seneca. Hwy 28 west through Walhalla. Turn right on Hwy 107. Left at Burrell’s Ford sign. Pass parking area (on right). Park before bridge. From kiosk, hike upriver 25-30 minutes. Beach will be obvious.

Chattooga River “Lazy Camp”
500 yards

Easy, Easy. Nice open spot on secion 4 of the river (expert paddling and guided rafting), can handle 6+ people and coolers. Take Hwy 123 to Westminster. Left on Hwy 76 west. Cross river. Take first left. At fork, bear left. Follow trail from parking area, downhill, to spot on the river.
