Quest Brewing is one of several new Upstate craft breweries.

What happens when new-found capital meets brewing talent? In Greenville it’s Quest Brewing.

The capital side of the equation is Andrew Watt, a local corporate IT honcho who came into a windfall inheritance. Wanting to park the cash in a nontraditional investment, he decided to parlay his love of craft beer and extra cash into a craft brewery. DonQuest Brewery_3 Richardson, 20 years as a brewer and brew master at a Cottonwood Brewery in North Carolina, provided the brewing talent.

Quest opened in 2013, and now distributes beer to nearly 200 locations across South Carolina. This will probably increase dramatically because it has begun canning some of its brews. Watt and Richardson’s goal is to take Quest regional into neighboring states.

Among its selections are Kaldi Coffee Stout, Smokin Mirror Porter, Ellida India Pale Ale and Golden Fleece Belgium Pale Ale that you can almost always find on tap. Seasonals like Pecan Porter and Kermesse Pumpkin Saison are worth waiting for.

Quest doesn’t have a kitchen, but a food truck is often on hand. Craft-beer lovers will find that the taproom is fair sized with space for six or so at its bar. A few tables and a small stage for music performances round out the room. All sorts of Quest paraphernalia are available in the gift shop.

Thursday is music night when you will find a couple of hundred people gathered to listen to live music, quaff a draft or two and maybe even order something from the food truck that always shows up. Guests bring chairs or spread a blanket. Kids and dogs Quest Brewery_2are welcome. It’s a great opportunity for some family bonding. There are also movie nights.

Whether it’s an event or just an evening enjoying a beer, Quest Brewing makes you feel right at home.
