Headquartered in Austin, TX, Greenville’s Chuy’s is South Carolina’s first location for this multi-state chain. Those willing to slug their way along traffic-clogged Woodruff Road will be rewarded with some tasty Tex-Mex dishes and thirst-quenching margaritas. It is located next to Twin Peaks, across the road from Cabela’s and Costco.

A tribute to Elvis highlights the colorful décor. The bar area is to the left as you face the hostess stand, which is the gateway to theS0014186 main dining room. Accommodating a dozen or so guests, the bar is along the right wall as you enter the bar area. High-top tables occupy the space’s center with booths strung along the left wall. The wait staff is friendly and efficient.

Happy hour features $4.25 house margaritas, $2.75 domestic beers and a well-stocked free nacho cart.

Chuy’s claims its philosophy is not to take anything seriously except its food. The tortillas are hand rolled in house throughout the day. The green chiles are harvested in Hatch, NM. The seven available sauces – Ranchero, Tomatillo, Hatch Green Chile and the rest – are homemade every day.

Apps include Chile Con Queso for $6.79, Nachos $6.79 and Quesadillas $6.99. Salads – dressings are made in house daily – like the Taco Salad and Tex-Mex Salad Combinations range in price from $4.99 to $9.29

S0044190Entrees include all the usual suspects, such as “Big As Yo’ Face” Burritos $8.29 to $10.29, Chile Rellenos $9.29 to $9.99 and Chicken Flautas $8.49. There are Enchiladas ranging in price from $8.59 for Veggie to $10.59 for the loaded Chicka-Chicka Boom Boom. You can’t do TexMex without Fajitas. Chuy’s offers a single portion for $13.59 or Fajitas for two for $24.69.

There are lots of other choices too.

A party ready to happen, Chuy’s is big fun for a couple of cold ones during happy hour or a sit-down dinner with the family. The Bush twins may have put Chuy’s on the national radar when they were busted at the Lake Travis Chuy’s in Austin for underage drinking, but its the food, great atmosphere and good times that keep people coming back.
