Mac’s Speed Shop

930 S. Main Street
Greenville, SC 29601
Hours: Mon-Sun 11 a.m. to Close

Part of a six-store Carolinas chain, Mac’s Speed Shop is located across Main Street from Flour Field, home of the Greenville Drive baseball team. As they are quick to tell you, it’s the place for “beer, bikes, BBQ.” It’s also the place to watch sports with a dozen flat screens, tuned to different sporting events, scattered around the dining room and three more outside.

With nearly 50 beers on tap – most of which are craft brews – and another 80 or so by the bottle, Mac’s certainly more than hasDSC00900 the “beer” part taken care of.  This is a full bar; so even if mixed drinks or wine is more to your liking, Mac’s has you covered at it’s L-shaped bar that seats more than 20. High-top tables and booths provide lots of options for dining. There is a large patio-seating area with picnic tables, too. We have found the service at the bar to be friendly, but not always as attentive as we like. A couple of the bartenders are among our Greenville favorites; while others are more window dressing than functional. Sometimes it just takes a little longer to get our fill of craft beer and good barbecue.

Although barbecue is the food specialty, the eclectic menu features other choices as well. Appetizers run the gamut from $3 Chips n’ Salsa to Smoked Chicken or Chili Nachos at $9.25. There are Tabasco Fried Pickles at $4, Deviled Egg Plate for $5 and Hog Wings for $8.25.

Wings come in lots of 8 ($6.79) and 16 ($13.59). Smoked and then grilled, wings can be ordered in eight different varieties, including Honey BBQ, SC Mustard Sauce and Hot Classic Buffalo.

DSC00894Five salads are priced at $4.95 or $5.95, with 7 add-ons like pulled pork, blackened shrimp and chicken for between $5 and $8.

For a little Mexican flair, you can opt for Tacos, with an assortment of fillings, like Buffalo Chicken and Blackened Catfish, for $4 or $5. Or try one of the quesadilla selections priced from $7 to $10.25. Smaller appetites will be pleased with the assortment of 15 sandwiches, wraps and burgers with 20 different condiments and add-ons. Prices range from $8 for the Dragon’s Blackened Fish PoBoy to $18 for the 20-oz Grubb Burger.

Priced between $9 and $28, the entrees are mostly smoked meats like ribs, brisket and turkey, but Fried Catfish, as well as Shrimp & Grits are also available. There’s even a Veggie Plate for $6 or $8, depending on the number of items.

What would a Southern meal be without dessert? Mac’s offers five in the $4-to-$7 range. At $7, we love the Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie!

Because it’s located in what locals call “the West End,” parking can be a challenge. Mac’s has its own lot, but it fills up fast. On game days or during dinner hours, spots along Main Street are precious, too. But even if you must park farther into downtown, Mac’s is worth the walk.
