In the finest tradition of Belgian restaurants, you reach the The Trappe Door via a set of stairs leading to the basement beneath DSCF3397Barley’s Taproom and Pizzeria downtown on West Washington Street. The entrances of these purveyors of food and beer are next to one another, and both are owned and operated by Josh Beeby.

Taking that final step down transports you to a cozy space reflecting European influences. The bar is an ideal size to take advantage of the convivial atmosphere. It is quiet and friendly. A terrific place to sneak off with someone special, meet friends or just unwind after a long day, The Trappe Door makes you feel like the real world simply can’t reach you.

Whether lunch or dinner, the menu has a definite Belgian bent. Appetizers fall into the $7 to $8 range. Soups and salads will only set you back $5 to $7. Burgers and sandwiches are an affordable $8 to $9; while dinner entrees ring the register at $16 to $24. There are also crepes, as well as several examples of a favorite Belgian treat: Moules Frites (mussel pots).

And then, of course, there’s the beer. The Trappe Door boasts 10 taps and a selection of roughly 150 bottled beers. They aren’t all brewed under the watchful eye of Trappist Monks, but you’d be hard pressed to find a more robust selection of Belgian style beers in the Upstate.
